"The first time I saw any proper mountains I was a 16 year old newly arrived in India. I was taken by some school friends to the Himalayan foothills where I was awestruck by the scale of it all, from the nearby forested slopes to the distant snows. It was was all so beautiful, mysterious and compelling as well as wild and potentially dangerous.​​"
