“I have always loved the purity of abstract painting, where one starts with nothing except a raw instinctive session of mark making. It's about the paint and its colour and texture, then comes a discovery of possibilities. I was inspired by free jazz and its emphasis on spontaneous improvisation and felt that painting could be like this, though its actually rather difficult to let go."
